Duke University is a comprehensive research-oriented private university in the United States. It was founded in 1838 and its school motto is "Knowledge and Faith". In the 2014 USNEWS U.S. comprehensive university rankings, Duke University was tied for seventh place with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Pennsylvania. Duke University Library is the third largest library in the United States (the first two are Harvard University and Yale University). In addition, Duke University's sports, especially basketball, enjoy a high reputation among American universities.
